Highway 1 in Big Sur reopens more than a year after massive landslide

Caltrans is expected to reopen California 1 in the Mud Creek area on Wednesday. The stretch of roadway was closed for months after it was covered by massive landslide.

On May 20, 2017, a hillside near a small ravine known as Mud Creek collapsed, sloughing an estimated 1.5 million tons of rock and mud over the stretch of highway and into the ocean. That section of roadway has been closed since.
