A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the Calexico border crossing shot and killed a man who approached him with a knife, officials said.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight when a man on a bicycle rode into one of the crossing lanes, got off his bike “with a knife in his hand and approached the officer,” according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No further details were released.

The shooting is being investigated by the Calexico police, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
