South Bay man with West Nile virus dies
A South Bay man infected with West Nile virus has died, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced Thursday.
Health officials said the man had other health problems and was hospitalized before dying.
The death is the first this year, although 12 other people have been diagnosed with the virus. Six did not have any symptoms, but the virus was found when they donated blood.
The county has found West Nile virus in 141 dead birds in Los Angeles County. About three-quarters of the birds were found in the South Bay.
West Nile virus is spread through mosquitoes, which get the virus by biting infected birds. It is more common in the summer. The disease typically causes mild or no symptoms, but in rare cases can lead to serious illness or death.
Elderly people are more at risk of the disease and its complications. Health officials warned residents to use mosquito repellent, avoid areas with mosquitoes around dawn and dusk, and get rid of any standing water in pools, gutters or pet bowls. They also urged residents to report dead birds by calling (877) 968-2473.
