Fire in San Diego County 85% contained, evacuation orders lifted
The brush fire in a rugged portion of northeast San Diego that burned 7,055 acres and destroyed 120 structures, most of them at the Al Bahr Mt. Laguna Shrine campground, is 85% contained and all evacuation orders have been lifted, Cal-Fire said Thursday.
The El Prado, Laguna and Horse Heaven campgrounds, which were ordered evacuated, have been spared damage. But the Foster Lodge campground, near the Al Bahr campground, was damaged, Cal-Fire said.
The blaze has been dubbed the Chariot fire because it was first spotted Saturday near Chariot Canyon southeast of Julian. Ten injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
On Thursday, more than 1,600 fire personnel were on the fire line, much of it in the Cleveland National Forest. Helicopters and air tankers helped in the attack.
Emergency forest closure remains in effect for all recreation areas within Cleveland National Forest, north of Horse Heaven campground.
