Oscar-nominated costume designer Janet Patterson dies

Costume designer Janet Patterson, a four-time Oscar nominee for period films such as “Bright Star,” ’’The Portrait of a Lady” and “The Piano,” has died.

Rocco Hindman, the head of the agency that represented her, said Tuesday that she died recently in Australia. Because of the wishes of her family, he could not reveal her age or the date of death.

“The Portrait of a Lady” star Nicole Kidman on Monday night paid tribute to the designer. Kidman said “she’s not here anymore, but she lives on through those beautiful clothes and images.”

The press-shy Patterson frequently collaborated with directors Jane Campion and Gillian Armstrong, and became known for her sumptuous 19th century costume creations.

Her last credited work was on “Far From the Madding Crowd.”
