Papal visits to the United States

Pope Francis will visit Washington, New York and Philadelphia Sept. 22-27.

The first pontiff to set foot in the United States was Pope Paul VI, who made a one-day stop in New York to address the United Nations in 1965. John Paul II visited the U.S. seven times, two of them quick stopovers in Alaska. The papal visits:
