The pope’s visit starting Tuesday comes as the American Catholic church, a congregation of about 72 million, stands as one of the Vatican’s most difficult constituencies, challenging church doctrine on women in the priesthood, gays and lesbians, and birth control.

Pope Francis himself is expected to speak to Americans about the issues of our time: immigration, healthcare reform and service to the poor. The pope’s words will resonate throughout the nation during a visit that will include a historic address to a joint session of Congress, the elevation of Juniper Serra to the sainthood and celebrations before massive crowds.
