New York ticker tape parades as a reflection of American society

Two hundred and five ticker tape parades have been held along the stretch of lower Broadway called the Canyon of Heroes since the first one in 1886 marked the dedication of the Statue of Liberty.

Van Cliburn parade

With ticker tape fluttering to the pavement, pianist Van Cliburn, who won international acclaim in a Moscow competition, throws kisses to the crowd on lower Broadway on his way to City Hall during a civic parade in his honor on May 20, 1958. The 23-year-old, 6-foot, 4-inch Cliburn of Kilgore, Texas, was tendered the parade usually reserved for military and athletic heroes.
