Mexico City protests mark one year since 43 students went missing
MEXICO CITY Thousands of people took to the streets in Mexico City Saturday renewing their calls for an explanation for the abduction and presumed murder of 43 students a year ago.
The parents of the students were joined by a large number of others to protest the results of an official investigation, which they found sorely lacking. The demonstrators carried banners and Mexican flags colored black.
The students are still officially considered missing. President Enrique Pena Nieto had previously guaranteed that the investigations would continue.
On September 26, 2014, police in the city of Iguala in the southwest state of Guerrero kidnapped 43 students and handed them over to the criminal gang Guerreros Unidos. Officials say the gang members killed the students and burned their bodies.
Family members reject the official version of what occurred, saying the investigation was carried out haphazardly and ended too soon.
