PHOTOS: $1,000 sneakers? An X-ray shines light on the season’s priciest kicks

Luxury fashion houses have always dabbled in streetwear, but this season their full embrace of the casual, cool aesthetic has taken the humble sneaker to uncharted levels.

Louis Vuitton, Gucci and other major high fashion labels, have transformed traditional sneakers (and their price points — $1,000 for sneakers?) into fashion spectacles full of removable crystals, embellished logos, exaggerated soles and over-the-top combinations of luxe fabrics.

Classic sports performance brands, like Nike and Reebok, aren’t missing out on this snazzy sneaker movement either, adding emojis, watermarked logos and techno fabrics to their cool kicks.

Lyst, a global fashion search platform, wanted to know what was underneath the exterior by looking at the complex construction of these shoes. The brand partnered with British artist and photographer Hugh Turvey, who took X-ray photographs of the sneakers, which he dubbed “xograms,” a melding of visible light and X-ray imagery.

The resulting images may give insight as to why they are the season’s hottest, most lusted-after accessories.
