Learn how to use less water in your garden

Residents can receive tips on how to use less water in their gardens during a Transition Laguna Beach meeting Tuesday.

David Bainbridge, an author and retired professor of sustainable management, will discuss how to deliver water directly to a plant’s roots with little to no evaporation, according to a news release.

It says Bainbridge will explain how “inexpensive materials such as terra cotta pots, recycled bottles and nylon rope” can be used “to create simple, effective and efficient watering systems” while producing “better plants, higher yields, fewer weeds and healthier soil.”

The talk is timely as California continues in a years-long drought and February’s average high temperature of 77.5 degrees eclipsed the previous record set in 1954, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Bainbridge’s books include “Gardening With Less Water,” “The Strawbale House Book” and “A Guide for Desert Restoration.”

Transition Laguna Beach advocates for edible gardens, water conservation and emergency preparedness, according to the organization’s website.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive. Admission is free with a food dish that can be shared. Cost is $10 without the food contribution.
