The Laguna Food Pantry recently reached a milestone, creating its first paid position.

The pantry’s nine-member board selected Justin Myers, a Laguna Beach resident and board member of multiple organizations, as its part-time director. Myers will coordinate communications, administration and fundraising for the Laguna Beach-based nonprofit, which distributes food to needy families.

Myers, an event planner and caterer, is president of the Laguna Beach Sister Cities Assn. and a member of the boards of the Laguna Playhouse, Friends of the Laguna Beach Library and Lions Clubs International’s Laguna chapter.

“He knows about food handling and fundraising and is a savvy communicator,” pantry board Chairman Korey Jorgensen said in a news release. “He is well-connected through his paid and volunteer work. We are eager to use all of his capabilities in strengthening our organization, which offers a crucial safety net to people in our area who are struggling to make ends meet.”

More families are seeking food at the pantry, which has been at 20652 Laguna Canyon Road since 2010, Jorgensen said in a follow-up phone interview. He did not disclose Myers’ pay.

“The amount of work asked of the board was increasing to the point where we needed help,” Jorgensen said.

Every weekday, the pantry collects and distributes 2,000 pounds of free groceries to shoppers from area low-income households, at least half of which have babies and young children.
