Turning food waste into fertilizer can help the environment and this class can show you how it’s done

Share

Laguna Beach residents can learn about turning food scraps into fertilizer for their yards during a free workshop June 11.

Lisa Ryder, a recycling consultant from Waste Management, the city’s solid waste hauler, will give residents tips on composting at home from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lang Park in South Laguna.

Waste Management will offer compost and worm bins for sale at discounted prices. Guests may also enter a raffle to win a free bin.

The goal of composting is to keep waste from entering landfills, where tightly packed materials can produce methane gases, Ryder said.

“You need air and water for compost,” Ryder said.

Acceptable compost items include egg and nut shells, coffee grounds and tea bags.

Lang Park is at 21540 Wesley Drive.
