Dodgeball fundraiser brings out 600 players

A record 68 teams of students and adults participated in SchoolPower’s sixth annual Dodgeball Tournament Wednesday at Laguna Beach High.

More than 600 players including Laguna Beach lifeguards and firefighters dressed in costume for the fundraising event.

Prizes were given to first-place teams in each division and for best costume. Winning teams earned $500 to designate to a Laguna Beach Unified School District teacher or school program of their choice.

El Morro Elementary teams fared well. The school’s teachers claimed the high school-adult category championship for the second straight year, while the team So Syncro took first place in the fourth- and fifth-grade division. So Syncro members included Kaia Bray,Bryce Ford,Noah Landa,Tabi McBean,Andre Nunn,Tatiana Nunn, Brave Rotert and Demsey Sadler.

The Dream Team won the sixth-through eighth-grade division. Team members included Caden Capobianco, Tayber Garcia, Sara Jacobs, Andrew Johnson, James Loughlin, Lauren Mistishen, Maximo Rossi and Brady Soloff.

Hobie, a longtime event supporter, provided $2,000 to offset a “significant” portion of expenses, SchoolPower Executive Director Robin Rounaghi wrote in an email.
