Around Town: Woman’s Club Tarnished Treasures Luncheon

Share

About 75 members and guests attended the annual Tarnished Treasures Holiday Luncheon on Dec. 11 hosted by the Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach.

A trove of treasures — holiday gifts, ceramics and glass, books, jewelry, toys and more — were for sale at bargain prices. The proceeds will go to families in need.

Red tablecloths gave a holiday cheer to the big room, with centerpieces of water wise succulents, detailed with a touch of holiday for sale on every table, all created by Vice President Elizabeth Roger. She and many volunteers worked the previous day preparing for the event, making price tags, displaying treasures, setting tables and decorating the room with holiday cheer.

Catered by chef Alessandro Pirozzi of Mare Culinary Lounge, the menu included a trio of delicious pastas to choose from and Mare’s Signature Caesar Salad, plus a variety of bite-size sweets and cookies for dessert.

The luncheon was followed by a party the next day for families who were given donated clothing and household items.

Boys & Girls Club offers DJ workshop

The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach afterschool program hosted a free DJ workshop Dec. 17 for its members and area youths.

The interactive workshop focused on the art of DJing and gave kids the opportunity to see careers in the arts and entertainment industry, according to a news release.

The workshop was supported by two Orange County based nonprofit organizations, Give a Beat and Everyone Deserves a Chance, that provide electronic music programs to youth as a tool to change lives, and organized by Give a Beat Co-founder Lauren Segal.

Give a Beat provides dance and world music lovers with a channel for activism and philanthropy, while affecting change in the face of inequality. Everyone Deserves a Chance sets out to create opportunities by sharing knowledge in EDM music production, film and photography.

Segal is a local resident and owner of the T-Shirt Company at Laguna Beach. During the workshop she shared inspirational stories that demonstrate the transformative power of music.

“Music is a game changer,” she said in the release. “It has a power like nothing else. It creates community, spreads positivity, and for youth in vulnerable situations, it can even truly be a life saver.”
