Briefs: Laguna Open set for Jun 4-5

Main Beach in Laguna Beach will be the site June 4-5 for the 61st annual Men’s Laguna Open beach volleyball tournament.

The two-day, double-elimination tournament is a match play format with a prize purse now at $5,000. The top 28 teams overall (by rating), and top four Laguna Beach teams (by rating), are guaranteed a spot in the main draw on June 4.

Tournament sponsorships are available and volunteers are being sought to help with the event.

Lewis top seven

Michael Lewis of Laguna Beach had top five and top seven finishes last weekend in the No. 41 EFFORT Racing/Curb-Agajanian Porsche 911 GT3 R for Round 6 of the Pirelli World Challenge at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.

In the qualifying session Saturday, Lewis finished the 20-minute session with a time of 1:22.916, the third-fasted time among 22 GT and GTA competitors. The finish placed him in the third starting position for the same day’s Race 1 of the Grand Prix of Birmingham (Round 6, PWC). He finished seventh in the race.

Going up against 20 other competitors GT and GTA competitors Sunday in Round 7 of the PWC, Lewis maintained an early fourth-place standing and ended up with a fifth-place finish.

Lewis and EFFORT Racing will next compete May 19-22 in Rounds 8 and 9 of the PWC at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.

AVP tour returns to HB

The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour returns to Surf City for the AVP Huntington Beach Open which starts Thursday at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The tournament, the second stop on seven-city 2016 tour, opened with qualifying rounds Thursday and Friday. Elimination rounds are May 7. The women’s and men’s finals are May 8.
