Characters come out for Beach Con
Dozens of cosplayers braved the heat Saturday in makeup and costumes at the first Beach Con event at Huntington State Beach.
Attendees, dressed in beach attire inspired by comic book and anime characters, participated in activities such as games, a scavenger hunt, sandcastle competition, speed dating, a bonfire and a potluck during the free meet-up.
Organizer Shadae Milner said she wanted to create a unique event for cosplayers as a way of stress relief from work or school.

“I put together a lot of gatherings in the course of the year,” she said. “Beach Con is the biggest gathering I’ve ever hosted. ... I love reaching out to the cosplay community and gathering people together. It’s the perfect way to make new friends that have the same interest as your own.”
