More than 260 people competed in the inaugural Surf City Pickleball Tournament last weekend, officials said.

Visitors from several states, including Hawaii, Georgia, Colorado, Idaho and Utah, came to Murdy Park in Huntington Beach to compete in men’s and women’s divisions in the sport, which combines elements from tennis, badminton and table tennis.

The event’s 27 sponsors included Pro Lite, Robert August Surfboards, Duke’s Restaurant, Pickleball Inc., Dicks Sporting Goods and St. Joseph Health, among others said Diana Abruscato, director of the event and Huntington Beach’s official ambassador for the sport.

“The feedback we have received has been that we hosted an exceptional first tournament,” she said. “We are well on our way to making the future of Pickleball a place to come and play in Huntington Beach.”
