Chinese shooter Yi Siling wins first gold medal of London Olympics

China’s Yi Siling won the first gold medal awarded at the London Games when she was victorious in the women’s 10-meter air rifle.

The 23-year-old world No. 1 and gold medal favorite defeated Poland’s Sylwia Bogacka in the final. Bogacka won the silver medal.

China’s Yu Dan collected the bronze medal.

“I’m very happy. I want to say thanks to China, to my mother and father” Yi said. “‘I’m very excited and happy. I have been shooting since I was 13 years old. I’ve been up since 5 a.m. this morning. There was a lot of pressure on me.”

Jamie Lynn Gray of the U.S. finished fifth and Sarah Scherer seventh.
