Free bike rodeo and road safety expo May 15
The Laguna Beach Police Department will hold its second bike rodeo and road safety expo May 15.
The free event’s goal is to promote safe and legal use of bicycles within the city, especially among children and teens, according to a news release. Police officials will also provide safety tips geared toward pedestrians and motorists.
“Whether you drive a vehicle, ride your bike, or walk, your safety depends on sharing the road safely with other vehicles and users,” the release said.
Police encourage attendees to bring bicycles and helmets to the event as police patrol teams will lead riders through an obstacle course, allowing cyclists to practice safe-riding techniques.
There will be a distracted driving simulator, a BMX stunt show, a raffle to win a free bike and complimentary hot dogs. The first 100 riders will receive a ticket for a free bike helmet to be picked up at police headquarters at a later date.
Interested participants must complete a waiver, which can be found on the city’s website at lagunabeachcity.net.
The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in parking lot No. 11 at 551 Forest Ave., the lot across Laguna Canyon Road from the Festival of Arts.
A grant from the California Office of Traffic and Safety is partially funding the event.
