Lonely Planet’s best places to travel in 2018 includes a Midwest surprise
Lonley Planet rolled out its must-see destinations for the coming year with its Best in Travel 2018 list, the latest installment of its annual roster that includes the top 10 countries, cities, best value destinations and regions.
At least one of the top picks may come as a bit of surprise to folks who haven’t been there lately. Let the drum roll for ... Detroit!
The Midwest metropolis that famously declared bankruptcy and was long the poster child for urban blight has motored its way to the No. 2 spot on Lonely Planet’s list of world’s best cities for 2018.
The comeback city was right behind Spain’s Seville, which led the list.
Another unexpected pick on the city list: San Juan, Puerto Rico, heralded for its “timeless and dynamic atmosphere.”
Lonely Planet’s Central America and Caribbean destination editor Bailey Freeman said in a press statement announcing the results: “While Puerto Rico’s capital was hit hard by the hurricane last month, San Juan’s resiliency will have it back on its feet for travelers in 2018.”
Alas, Chicago didn’t make the cut — at least not with the Lonely Planet panel. But it did score big points recently with Conde Nast readers, who chose our sweet home as the best city in the U.S. for the first time in the 30-year history of the travel magazine’s annual survery.
