Hawaii: Oahu’s Aulani expands its water park, adds a cafe

In true Disney style, the Aulani, the leeward Oahu resort that opened in August 2011, is giving customers what they want: a larger water park and a new eating spot.

Beginning Saturday, the Aulani resort will expand its Waikolohe Valley water play area with the opening of Ka Maka Landing. It features include an infinity pool, a splash zone for younger children and a new poolside cafe.

The pool boasts an infinity edge overlooking a 9-acre, blue lagoon with a white sand beach. A Hawaiian-themed grotto offers views of the sunsets over the Pacific. Underwater, swimmers will hear the sounds of dolphins and whales.

Keiki Cove, the new water play area for toddlers, features a tide-pool theme. Water jets will shoot from an “octopus” whose “tentacles” spread across the cove floor in a blue mosaic design.

Disney’s Imagineering team created the expanded recreational area.

“In keeping with the rest of the resort, we integrated Hawaiian culture, stories and artistry into the design of the new pool area and restaurant to create an inspiring new environment for our guests,” Jeanette Lomboy, executive producer for Aulani, said in a news release.

Also new: Ulu Cafe, which will provide quick service meals throughout the day, as well as grab- and-go selections.

Aulani sits on 21 acres of oceanfront property near the village of Ko Olina, about 17 miles west of Honolulu International Airport.
