Cunard Line 12-night cruise of Egypt and Greek Isles starts at $891 per person

If you’ve ever wanted to try a Cunard Line cruise, autumn might be a good time to sail and save. For example, a 12-night cruise that includes Egypt and the Greek islands in November starts at less than $100 per night per person-- a great price for sampling this storied line.

The deal: The “Egypt and Greek Isles” cruise departs from Athens, with stops in Turkey, Egypt, another Greek port and Croatia before arriving in Venice. The cheapest inside cabin starts at $891 per person, based on double occupancy. That price doesn’t include airfare, fees, fuel surcharges or trip insurance.

When: The cruise is scheduled from Nov. 8 to 20. The cheapest fare, of course, is subject to availability.

Tested: I went to the Cunard website and found availability for this sailing aboard the Queen Victoria at the cheapest $891 per person rate for an inside cabin. The final price came to $1,135, which included some insurance, fuel supplement and fees. For $107 more, I could have booked an outside cabin with obstructed ocean views.

As a comparison, the cheapest fares for similar 12-night cruises in September aboard the Queen Victoria (“Greek Isles and Ancient Wonders” and “Greek Isles and Aegean Treasures”) start at $1,291 and $1,716 per person, respectively, and didn’t include fees, fuel surcharge or insurance.

Caution: The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert on Egypt that states, in part: “Given that Egyptian security services have not yet fully redeployed, the Department alerts U.S. citizens planning to travel to Egypt to the possibility of sporadic unrest.” And although there is no alert out on Greece, Athens has been experiencing a crime wave.
