American Airlines’ narrow-body jets hope to keep you entertained

American Airlines will add new narrow-body, or single-aisle, aircraft to its fleet next year that it hopes will sway travelers by offering increased Wi-Fi and entertainment options.

The new deliveries will replace American’s fleet of domestic Boeing 757-200s and MD80s, which will be retired over time, American said, adding that it hopes to retire the MD80 and Boeing 757-200 domestic aircraft by the end of this decade.

Here are some of the features of the A321 and A319:

Transcontinental A321

The Transcontinental A321s, to be delivered in July 2013, will fly between New York’s JFK and LAX and JFK and San Francisco (SFO). First and business class will offer lie-flat seats for sleep.

Each seat will have a 15.4-inch touchscreen monitor with news and entertainment including seat-to-seat chat, live text news and weather, up to 75 movies, more than 150 TV programs and 350 audio choices.

Half the 72 seats in the main cabin will be “Extra” seats that add 4 to 6 inches of legroom. Economy HD-capable touchscreens will measure 8.9-inches with a selection of free movies, TV and audio programs.

All seats will include a universal AC 110 volt plug and a USB port for charging devices.

A319

These planes will have two classes of service and will offer main cabin “Extra” seats. Entertainment, connectivity and individual power outlets will mirror those of the A321.

The A319, like the A321, has leather seats and is expected to be added to the fleet in July 2013.
