Hong Kong: The Peninsula gets a facelift and some high-tech toys

Share

Gadget geeks will love the innovations at The Peninsula Hong Kong, which just completed a $58-million renovation that added cutting-edge technology to the Grand Dame’s list of superlatives.

The 84-year-old hotel, which often pops up on lists of the world’s best places to stay, did much more than add flat-screen televisions and wireless Internet connections—although it did both of those.

It also personalized guest rooms with touch-screen panels, with every device available in five languages. And it has given guests full control of all in-room functions by way of bedside, desk tablets and wall panels, enabling access to hotel services, streaming television, mood lighting, curtains, temperature and the Nespresso machine. The devices also serve as city guides and valets.

All the in-room technology is integrated. If the telephone rings, the television sound is lowered. If it rings at night, a soft light goes on.

“We’re celebrating the re-launch of an icon, as well as cementing this hotel’s place firmly in the future,” said Peter Borer, chief executive. “Innovation is part of the Peninsula’s DNA.”

Room rates start at $641 for a superior room and $1,051 for a superior suite.
