Canada: New gallery in Victoria to showcase naturalist’s work

The works of Canadian artist and naturalist Robert Bateman will soon be showcased in a new gallery along Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
When it opens May 24, the Robert Bateman Centre will become the city’s newest attraction. The gallery will feature 130 of his wildlife paintings, from those evoking British Columbia settings to his respected African collection.
The 5,000-square-foot center will also include three interactive exhibits. For example, while viewing Bateman’s 36 paintings of birds, guests can push buttons to listen to the sounds made by the various creatures.
The gallery and an adjoining gift shop will be inside the historic CPR Steamship Terminal at 470 Belleville St., which was built in 1924. One of the building’s designers was Francis Rattenbury, architect of the British Columbia Legislature Building and the Fairmont Empress Hotel. Both are nearby, also along the waterfront.
Gallery admission is about $12.30 in U.S. dollars. Hours will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays-Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday-Saturday.
