On the morning of Dec. 26, 2004, a monster magnitude 9.0 earthquake shook the Indian Ocean floor, triggering giant waves that surged more than 2 1/2 miles inland on Indonesia’s Sumatra island.

More than 230,000 people in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and several other countries died that day, half of them under 18, according to some estimates.

In the 10 years since the Indian Ocean tsunami, Indonesia has seen profound social, economic and religious changes.
