Regarding David Lazarus’ column “Health accounts are bad medicine,” Feb. 4:

How is it that this country can spend billions each year on tennis shoes, DVDs, electronic gadgets, music downloads, fast food and other “stuff,” but no one can put money into health savings accounts?

Taking responsibility for one’s health with insurance and positive life choices is a reality of adult life. Everyone’s situation is different, but I found the HSA to be a lifesaver after being laid off and not able to afford COBRA.

HSA plans are portable, force savings (something we all need to get better at), give a tax deduction for the amount you “saved” that year and pay you your account balance when you turn 65 and go on Medicare.
