Bratton chosen to run Kroll

Former Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton has been named chairman of the global investigative firm Kroll, which employs 3,000 workers around the world, a spokesman for Kroll’s parent company, Altegrity Inc., said Wednesday evening.

Bratton, 62, served seven years as Los Angeles police chief before retiring in 2009 to join Altegrity. The Virginia-based company acquired Kroll for $1.1 billion this summer.

Bratton will report directly to Altegrity’s chief executive, Mike Cherkasky, Altegrity spokesman Michael John said.

Kroll, based in New York, has offices in 35 countries and provides a range of intelligence, security and technology services. It has offices throughout the United States, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Miami and Philadelphia.

The company’s clients include corporations, law firms, academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, wealthy people, entertainers and celebrities, the company said on its website.

Bratton ran police forces in Boston and New York before joining the Los Angeles Police Department in 2002. He is expected to work closely with former Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss in merging Kroll with Altegrity’s global investigative branch, Altegrity Risk International.

Kroll is one of four businesses operated by Altegrity. The others include U.S. Investigations Services, which provides security clearances for federal government employees; HireRight, an Irvine company that performs pre-employment screening for private companies; and Explore Information Services, which monitors driving records for automobile insurance companies.
