Aetna plans two rounds of job cuts

Times Wire Reports

Health insurer Aetna said it would cut 625 jobs immediately, or nearly 2% of its staff, and would make a similar number of cuts by the end of the 2010 first quarter because of the economic downturn and the potential effect of healthcare reform.

Aetna, which is based in Hartford, Conn., trimmed 977 jobs last December and has about 35,500 workers.

Health insurers have been hurting financially as corporate job cuts have trimmed the number of people covered by employer-sponsored health insurance. With unemployment projected to keep rising into 2010, many insurers project enrollment losses to continue.
