Ben & Jerry’s dishes out free scoops and fans crash website

Share

Ice cream lovers around the world just let out a scream, one so loud it brought down a company’s website.

Ben & Jerry’s is dishing out free scoops at participating locations worldwide Tuesday as the Vermont firm celebrates its 34th annual “Free Cone Day.” But its website wasn’t working Tuesday morning as ice cream fans flooded the site, likely searching for the nearest location to enjoy a free scoop of Chunky Monkey at one of its more than 650 stores in 20 countries.

“It’s free, it’s fair, it’s everywhere,” Dave Stever, the ice cream maker’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement.

The freebies aren’t regulated solely to a cone though. The company is giving out free cups as well.

Ben & Jerry’s spokeswoman Kelly Mohr said in an email that the website was down because of “heavy traffic.”

The company said it has given away free scoops during an annual celebration since its first anniversary in 1979 as a way to show gratitude to its customers. It expects to give out more than a million scoops Tuesday.

To ensure your nearest Ben & Jerry’s location is giving out free scoops, the company recommends calling the shop or checking the “Scoop Shop Locator” on its website.

Mohr said Ben & Jerry’s was working to get its website back online.
