Gateway, HP Settle Several Patent Suits

Computer maker Gateway Inc. said Wednesday that it had agreed to pay its bigger rival Hewlett-Packard Co. $47 million to end several patent disputes.

Gateway said it would pay $25 million in the next week and $22 million in a year. All seven cases between them will be dismissed.

Hewlett-Packard claimed Gateway and its EMachines and AD Technologies units infringed 27 patents. Gateway accused Hewlett-Packard of infringing 13 patents.

The suits were over patents covering such features as passwords, power usage, creating notebook machines and connecting computers to printers. HP shares rose $1.24 to $34.05. Gateway fell 8 cents to $2.28.
