Yahoo investigating possible hack of half a million accounts
Yahoo is looking into what might be the hacking of half a million email and password combinations.
The company said Thursday it is investigating claims of a security breach of its Yahoo user IDs but did not give other details regarding the exact size of the breach or how it the company might have been compromised.
Another group, though, does appear to have an exact head count. D33D, a group of hackers, said it was responsible for the breach and claims that it took 453,000 accounts, according to an Associated Press report.
“We hope that the parties responsible for managing the security of this subdomain will take this as a wake-up call, and not as a threat,” the group said online according to PCWorld.
D33D said it hacked one of Yahoo’s subdomains for the accounts. That subdomain is believed to be Yahoo Voices. Among the stolen accounts were email address from users on AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and others.
So if you have a Yahoo Voices account and you use any of the above email addresses, changing your email password could be the safest thing you can do until Yahoo sends out more information.
“We are still investigating,” said a spokeswoman for Yahoo according to the Associated Press.
