A very juicy tip

When you’re hungry for just-smoked flavor but in no position to fire up the grill, stop by Western Kosher, a family-owned butcher shop and market in the Fairfax district. At Western Kosher you can pick up a large, juicy chicken smoked on the premises over hickory and mesquite wood. The chickens, brined before smoking so they’re exceptionally moist, are perfectly cooked. And the smoke flavor, though pronounced, isn’t overly aggressive, so hot or cold slices can be enjoyed with a wide range of dishes. (The sliced breast meat is great on a crusty roll drizzled with wildflower honey.)

Smoked chickens, $4.99 a pound (the average chicken is 3 to 3 1/2 pounds), available Wednesday through Friday or by special order at Western Kosher, 444 N. Fairfax Ave., (323) 655-8870. Open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Saturdays.
