Cancer Study Published in the Lancet Was Fake
A study published last year in the Lancet, purporting to show that aspirin and other painkillers halved the risk of oral cancer, was fabricated, the medical journal announced Wednesday.
Officials at the Radium Hospital in Oslo -- where Dr. Jon Sudbo claimed to have conducted the research -- notified the journal that all the patients in the study were fictitious.
The paper’s American coauthors are not believed to have been involved in the fraud.
On Friday, editors of the New England Journal of Medicine said that two photomicrographs in a 2001 paper by Sudbo in that journal purporting to be from different patients were actually from the same patient, calling into question the veracity of that study of the treatment of oral cancer.
