What could $15 billion from the VW emissions-cheating settlement buy?

A federal judge has approved a $14.7-billion settlement in the Volkswagen emissions-cheating case, the largest auto-scandal settlement in U.S. history.

The Volkswagen settlement could offset more than a billion tons of carbon dioxide in California. According to the Climate Policy Initiative's California Carbon Dashboard project, one ton of carbon emitted in the state costs $12.95 to offset.

In 2015, there were 6.29 million registered cars on the road in Los Angeles County. Drivers could get 600,000 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive cars — 10% of the cars in the county.

An estimated 3.97 million people living in the city of Los Angeles could each receive a check for $3,700.

It’s enough to quadruple the size of Yosemite National Park’s current 705,000 acres. The park recently announced it would be adding 400 acres for $2.3 million.

You could buy a a good chunk of Snapchat, valued at $20 billion to $25 billion.
