Royals great Kevin Appier is ready to play ball for 185-acre ranch in Kansas
Retired pitcher Kevin Appier, whose 16-year career began and ended with the Kansas City Royals, has put his sprawling ranch in Paola, Kan., on the market for $4.5 million.
Located roughly 45 miles south of Kansas City, the ranch includes a log cabin-style main house, a historic horse barn, a manager’s house and a 17-acre fishing lake on 185 acres, according to listing agent Lisa Burton of ReeceNichols Real Estate. An additional 245 acres of adjoining land is also available for purchase.
Built with logs of Douglas fir, the main house sits on a bluff overlooking the lake and rolling pastures. A great room with a two-story stone fireplace, a center-island kitchen, an office/den, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms lie within 8,500 square feet of living space.
The second-floor master suite sports an oversize walk-in closet and French doors that open to a private balcony. A lower walk-out level holds a game room, a wine vault and a gym.
Outdoors, a dirt trail leads from the home to the lake and a boat slip. Mature trees dot the country landscape.
Appier is selling to move to Michigan to be closer to his wife’s family. He owns other property in Kansas and other parts of the U.S., records show.
The 48-year-old former pitcher had stops with the Oakland A’s, New York Mets and Angels in between two tours of duty with the Royals. He retired with 169 wins and an ERA of 3.74, and was an All-Star in 1995.
