California congressman criticizes Napolitano nomination

A U.S. congressman from California isn’t applauding Janet Napolitano’s nomination to be the next president of the University of California system.

Napolitano plans to step down as secretary of Homeland Security in September. She is also the former governor of Arizona.

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) said it was “disappointing to see an individual with such a poor record on civil liberties and government selected to run the University of California,” he said in a statement.

LaMalfa also said that students could look forward to “the same authoritarian management style” that Napolitano brought to the Department of Homeland Security.

Napolitano has been criticized for her stance on immigration and for the department’s handling of some asylum cases.

“Napolitano’s views are entirely incompatible with the UC system’s history of civil liberties,” LaMalfa said. “The decision to appoint her is perplexing.”

Others, including Gov. Jerry Brown, have said that Napolitano brings a welcome outsider’s experience to the 10-campus UC system.
