An off-duty Border Patrol agent has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a 27-year-old man in southwestern Riverside County, authorities said.

John Demery, 40, was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Adam Thomas about 12:45 a.m. Saturday in the 41100 block of Toledo Drive in east Hemet, authorities said. The victim had been shot multiple times.

Demery has been suspended from his job as authorities investigate the shooting.

The suspect confronted the victim and shots were fired following an argument, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Thomas, a Moreno Valley resident, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
