Rep. Becerra endorses Eloise Gomez Reyes for Congress

Breaking with the election arm of House Democrats, Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles) has endorsed Colton attorney Eloise Gomez Reyes for an open Inland Empire congressional seat.

“Eloise is a proven leader who will get the job done in Washington for families in the Inland Empire,” Becerra said at a news conference with Reyes outside San Bernardino City Hall.

“I know she’ll work tirelessly on behalf of those who work hard, play by the rules and deserve a fair shot at the American Dream,” Becerra added.

Reyes, who is also endorsed by Emily’s List, which supports female Democratic candidates, is one of four Democrats hoping to replace retiring Rep. Gary Miller (R-Rancho Cucamonga).

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and at least one local Democratic club have endorsed Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar, who narrowly missed making the general election ballot in 2012.

That year, under California’s new top-two primary system, Aguilar split the Democratic vote with three other candidates of his party, allowing the two Republicans on the ballot to advance to the fall campaign. Miller won in a district that is increasingly tilting Democratic and many observers believed he would have had trouble holding onto the seat.

Three Republicans also have jumped into the race, including a longtime aide to Miller.
