Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick said Friday that she was considering running for the City Council in 2009, setting the stage for a potential return to her old job, although in a different district.

Chick is eyeing the 5th District seat now held by Councilman Jack Weiss, who is running for city attorney in 2009.

Chick served on the City Council from 1993 to 2001, when term limits forced her out and she won election to the controller’s post. The difference now is that Los Angeles voters in November eased term limits for the council, allowing members to serve a third term.

That change is also why Assemblyman Richard Alarcon (D-Los Angeles) is running for his old 7th District seat in the March 6 primary.

“During the last several weeks I have been gratified and encouraged by the countless individuals who have urged me to continue my work in public service by running for a third term on the City Council in 2009,” Chick said in a statement released by her office Friday.

She added that her tenure as controller has given her a fresh perspective on problems in the city and that she would make a final decision about running this spring.

Weiss said he and Chick talked several weeks ago about her potential candidacy. He did not say whether he would support her.

“Many people are considering running for the seat and have contacted me, and I’m happy to talk to them about it because it’s a great job,” he said.

Chick lives in Silver Lake in the city’s 4th District but has plenty of time to move should she decide to run.
