One of the four candidates for Orange County sheriff on the June 6 ballot has dropped out of the race, endorsing an opponent.

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Alcaraz of Newport Beach threw his support to Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. William Hunt, though Alcaraz’s name will remain on the ballot.

In a prepared statement, Alcaraz said he came to realize that Hunt shared his concerns about Sheriff Michael S. Carona, who is seeking reelection. He and Hunt had similar ideas about how to fix problems in the department, Alcaraz said.

“Although I have made many sacrifices, both financial and personal, for this campaign,” he said, “the simple fact is my candidacy represents a fracturing of the opposition that must be united if we are to remove Mike Carona from office and return a sense of honor to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.”

Alcaraz had lent his campaign $100,000 and spent about $20,000 as of mid-March.

The fourth candidate on the ballot is Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Ralph Martin of Coto de Caza.
