Boxer hopes to mark trail ‘historic’
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) introduced legislation Thursday to authorize a study of the Western States Trail through the High Sierra in California to see whether it qualifies to be designated a National Historic and Scenic Trail.
The bill, which is cosponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), authorizes the study of the historic route that runs about 100 miles from Squaw Valley to Auburn.
The study will help determine whether the trail fits the special historic, ecological and scenic requirements of the designation.
“The Western States Trail is a nationally significant resource that highlights California’s natural heritage,” Boxer said.
“This legislation will help ensure that one of the most beautiful areas of California can be enjoyed by runners, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts for generations to come.”
Since 1955 and 1974 respectively, the Western States Trail Ride and the Western States Endurance Run have been conducted along the historic route.
Boxer noted that the Western States National Study Act enjoyed broad support from the boards of supervisors in Placer and El Dorado counties, as well as the Auburn City Council.
