U.N. officials say Zimbabwe’s cholera epidemic could pass 60,000 cases next week, making it the biggest outbreak in Africa in more than a decade.

The illness has killed nearly 2,800 people, and Zimbabwe has little hope of ending it and avoiding total economic collapse without a power-sharing deal between President Robert Mugabe and the opposition, analysts say.

Neither Mugabe nor his foe, Morgan Tsvangirai of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, shows signs of compromise in the run-up to a regional summit aimed at breaking the deadlock in negotiations.
