German troops will be stationed in neighboring France for the first time since the Nazi occupation during World War II, both countries’ leaders announced.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy wrote that a nearly 20-year-old French-German military brigade “will in the future be based in both our nations” instead of only in Germany.
A spokeswoman for Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union confirmed that about 600 German troops were to be involved in the move, but had no further details. The joint brigade has 2,800 German and 2,300 French troops.
