Journalists at high risk in Mexico, group says
A leading journalists association on Tuesday ranked Mexico among the most dangerous countries in the world for reporters, as news media workers increasingly become targets of organized crime groups.
Five Mexican reporters were killed in 2008 and seven have disappeared in the last three years, according to a report released Tuesday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, a New York-based organization.
Among those killed was Armando Rodriguez, a veteran crime reporter who was shot at least eight times in front of his Ciudad Juarez home. The crime remains unsolved, like the majority of kidnappings and killings involving journalists, the report says.
The Mexican government’s failure to resolve the cases has resulted in a culture of impunity that leaves journalists vulnerable to more attacks.
Reporters have stopped covering some areas of the country and some have fled to the U.S. after receiving threats, the report says.
