Re “Bush Signs Tough Rules on Detainees,” Oct. 18

Oct. 17, 2006, will go down as the day democracy died in the United States. If these detainees are guilty, why deny them a hearing? And what’s to stop President Bush from declaring anyone who disagrees with him a terrorist?

It’s hard to see how we win a war on terror by abandoning the rule of law and our moral compass. Shame on the president, the Congress and the country for standing idly by. But then, they may feel as powerless and as impotent as I do. I don’t think this bodes well for our country.
