L.A. official reportedly sought for Obama environment team
President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to name Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Nancy Sutley as a top member of his environmental protection team, a Democrat familiar with the appointment said Tuesday.
Sutley is to be made chairwoman of the Council on Environmental Quality, which helps coordinate and devise environmental policies for the White House.
She now serves as deputy mayor for energy and environment, and is on the board of directors for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
During the 2008 presidential race, Sutley was a member of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender steering committee.
She contributed $1,000 to Clinton during the Democratic primary season, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a watchdog group that tracks campaign contributions.
Sutley has since entered the Obama fold. After his election, Obama tapped her for a special review team that is studying the Environmental Protection Agency.
Through Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s press office, Sutley declined to comment Tuesday.
