Planning your trip to downtown Los Angeles


JW Marriott Hotel Los Angeles at L.A. Live, 900 W. Olympic Blvd; (213) 765-8600; With 878 rooms and the city's convention hall next door, this is the premium-brand conventioneer lodging that downtown has lacked for decades. Lobby includes L.A. Market restaurant and bar and lounge areas. Though a spokesman says rates begin at $269, the website showed April discounts as low as $199. Parking $38.

Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles, 900 W. Olympic Blvd.; (213) 743-8800; Perched on the 22nd to 26th floors of a 54-story tower, this Ritz has 123 rooms and a fancy Asian restaurant, WP24. Rates start as low as $369, a hotel spokeswoman says. Parking $50.

The Holiday Inn (to be rechristened the Luxe City Center Hotel on June 15), 1020 S. Figueroa St.; (310) 440-3090 or (213) 748-1291, It stands nine stories tall, its 180 spacious rooms positioned right across the street from L.A. Live, an easy stroll to the convention center. Rates now typically run $159-$300, less with auto club or AARP discounts. After the rebranding, the starting brochure rate will rise to $190, but advance-booking discounts could knock 10%-20% off that figure. Parking $25.

The Figueroa Hotel, 939 S. Figueroa St.; (213) 627-8971; Born as a 12-story YWCA in 1925, the Fig endures as an edgy tourist hotel. It has 285 rooms. Rates $148-$184 for most rooms, $225-$265 for suites. Parking $12.

Ritz-Milner Hotel, 813 S. Flower St.; (213) 627-6981 or (213) 627-6981; This 12-story building goes back to 1908, but don't expect a lot of historic charm. Expect low prices. The Ritz-Milner's 137 rooms come in three varieties: economy ($69); standard ($89); and the suites ($119), which have newer, fancier furniture, fixtures and linens, but are really just large rooms. Parking $12.

O Hotel, 819 S. Flower St.; (213) 623-9904; Built in the 1920s and operated for years as a rent-controlled Orchid Hotel, the O Hotel (still known to many as the Orchid) reinvented itself in late 2007 as a boutique hotel with an industrial chic lobby that oozes a cocktail lounge vibe. It has 67 rooms on five floors, along with a Mediterranean restaurant and bar with live music twice weekly. Rates run about $109 (standard rooms) to $249 (suites), and guests get free access to the nearby Gold's gym. Parking $10-$18.
