Pipe bomb explodes near Huntington Beach preschool

Police are seeking the public’s help in finding two teenagers who set off a pipe bomb near a Huntington Beach preschool and gym Thursday evening.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad responded to 19270 Goldenwest St. at about 5 p.m. after receiving reports of a pipe bomb exploding, according to a news release from the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The explosive was set off in the middle of the parking lot between Patti’s Preschool and LA Fitness, police said.

No one was in the area at the time of the explosion, and parents and students were safely evacuated from the school.

Authorities found the pipe, a type typically used to launch bottle rockets, at the scene. A mortar was also ignited on the ground and found near the pipe.

Witnesses told authorities they saw two male teens running from the location after the explosion.
